If you will be in town for Memorial Day, we have some special events. It’s been 150 years since Memorial Day was created by notable Illinoisan, former Illinois Senator and Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, John A. Logan of Murphysboro, Illinois. Here are two events we welcome you to join other Society members in commemorating Memorial Day:
Memorial Day Program @ Lincoln’s Cottage

MEMORIAL DAY in LOGAN CIRCLE
Where: Logan Circle, Washington, DC. (Hosted by the Logan Circle Community Association)

Time: 11:30 a.m. Welcoming music by Baltimore’s Kupra Quintet brass band
2018 marks the sesquicentennial of the Grand Army of the Republic General Orderestablishing Memorial Day, issued by its Commander John A. Logan, notable son of Illinois who served his state as Democratic Congressman (1859-1862), Colonel of the 31st Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, promoted to brigadier general and then major general of Volunteers (1861-1865), Republican Congressman (1867-1871) and Republican Senator (1871-1877). He was the GOP candidate for Vice-President in 1888.
While celebrating Illinois’ Bicentennial in our Nation’s capital, please consider joining us for a day of sports-filled volunteerism with DC’s kids on Saturday, June 2nd!
Volunteer for the DC Scores Jamboree!
Where: Anacostia Park, Field 6
When: Saturday, June 2, 2018
Time: Any time you can volunteer in 8:00am – 4pm range
Details: The Society has the opportunity to volunteer at the 2018 Jamboree hosted by DC Scores. The Jamboree is the organization’s main programming event in which 2,500 participants and their families are invited to an all-day soccer tournament and community festival.
DC Scores is a community partnership involving D.C. United and DC Scores which aims to serve elementary and middle school students from low-income families across the District. They operate in all eight wards and currently have 55 sites at DC schools. They host weekly soccer games, promote community service and work to build the confidence of the students so they can achieve success on and off the soccer field.
